FIRST ANNUAL GANDHIAN NON-VIOLENCE
CONFERENCE AT MEMPHIS, OCT.2004

Conference for Community and Justice. Period: October, 8-9th, 2004. Hosted by:
Christian Brothers University & Rhodes College. Theme: "Teaching to Practice
Gandhian Non-violence:Perspectives from Academics and Activists." In this
conference, efforts will be made to bring together activists and academics to
focus on how they may help each other in the common purpose of continuing the
legacy of Gandhian non-violence. In promoting this integration of activism and
academics, we especially seek papers/presentations that draw upon the practice
of Gandhian non-violence. The conference will feature five concurrent sessions
organized around major themes in relation to Gandhian non-violence militarism,
poverty, racism, ecology, and personal non-violence. Proposals are invited for
papers in the concurrent sessions that would draw upon Gandhian non-violence in
relation to issues as listed after each major theme.

1. Militarism: genocide, terrorism, arms trade, approaches to peacemaking
resolution on an international scale.
2. Poverty: employment, living wage, homelessness, criminal justice
system, education, resource depletion.
3. Racism: civil rights, environmental racism, urban violence, police
brutality, death penalty, health care, immigration, community reinvestment.
4. Ecology: resource depletion, industrial pollution, animal rights,
social ecology-the well being of neighbourhoods.
5. Personal Non-violence: spirituality, meditation, simplicity,
vegetarianism, civil disobedience, non-violent citizenship, models and practice
of leadership, responses to domestic violence, teen violence.
