HOUSE PANEL APPROVES RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING DIWALI
Washington, Oct 24:
Showing support to Indian Americans and the Indian diaspora throughout the
world, a US House of Representatives panel has approved a resolution
commemorating Diwali. The resolution, ''Recognizing the religious and historical
significance of the festival of Diwali'', sponsored by Congressmen recognised
Diwali as an important festival. It would go before the full House of
Representatives for a vote later this week. The festival of lights, marked the
beginning of the Hindu New Year, and was also celebrated widely among Sikhs,
Buddhists and Jains. The resolution acknowledged the international, religious
and historical importance of the festival and appreciated the religious
diversity in both India and the United States. It supported the new relationship
of collaboration and dialogue in international efforts between the two
countries. Congressman Joseph Crowley, who represents a large number of
South Asians and Indians in Queens, New York, said, ''Every year, Diwali is
marked by millions in the United States and billions throughout the world.
Representing one of the largest Indian American communities, I take pride in
observing Diwali with my constituents annually. The legislation would receive
full consideration in the House of Representatives.
